A moulded carbon is typically used for the softer face on the stationary component. The original concept of using the cast iron impeller boss as the hard face was replaced by an alumina ceramic insert but it is now most common to use silicon carbide for the rotating face. Some heavy duty truck water pump seals will use a pair of silicon carbide faces.

These seals are usually of the stationary floating face design with a single coil spring surrounding the elastomer bellows. They will also normally be supplied by the seal manufacturer as a cartridge assembly, or in automotive industry terminology a cassette, complete with a sleeve ready to be assembled directly onto the water pump shaft.

A major factor with the design of these seals is achieving satisfactory cooling to the seal faces, compatible with the high volume seal design. Many designs crimp the elastomer in a shroud with an elastomer sleeve as a seal, but this can inhibit heat transfer. A variety of arrangements are used to achieve an acceptable compromise.
